Happy Thanksgiving!
This holiday is first and foremost about counting blessings. I’m thankful for the following: daily contact with a sister; fresh air and clean water; a roof over my head; unconditional love from Koda, my Shih Tzu; renewed friendships with old friends, cousins and classmates; my siblings who purchased a “new” used SUV for me for my 70th birthday; a package containing homemade sauerkraut and salsa from my cousin Pat; PNWA, INWG, and Spokane Authors writing groups; my literary agent; my publicist; my boss for the opportunity to sell annuities; doctor appointments which became my social life this year; and last, but not least, Dr. Google.
If you’re like me, you LOVE good food, maybe too much. My mouth is watering just thinking about all the good food at Thanksgiving: sizzling browned turkey and gravy, oyster stuffing, fluffy mashed potatoes, green beans covered with cream cheese and bacon, crisp lettuce or a vegetable salad dripping with a favorite dressing, tart and tangy cranberry sauce and delicious pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream. Yum! What’s not to love?
After a Thanksgiving feast, it’s time to get in shape. Saw a site on Facebook for a Ukrainian company called Better Me, which piqued my interest because it advertised chair yoga. I tried chair yoga several years ago but ended up with chest pains because I didn’t do the exercises properly. A doctor advised me to quit doing the upper body exercises for a month or more and the pain went away. After that, I hired a trainer at the gym ($800) to show me how to exercise properly. Money well spent. I went to the gym almost every day last year and lost 20 pounds.
Life stress, overeating and eating out of boredom caused me to gain some weight back. So, I signed up for Better Me. They designed a 28-day program for chair yoga based on my profile and goals. The first day was 15 minutes, the next day 21 minutes. Not hard to fit into a busy schedule. Easy peasy exercises. And the cost was reasonable: $15.
Of course, I’d lose a whole lot more weight if I didn’t have a sweet tooth. I need to re-read the book, “Breaking Up with Sugar,” by Molly Carmel, that helps people find a sustainable solution for a sugar addiction, including alcohol which turns into pure sugar.
